The race day checklist

The night before to the finish line, in the order the day happens.

Bag systems and check-in times are set by the event. Your athlete guide is the one that counts.

6 essential left

The night before

0/10

Everything you do now is something you cannot forget at 04:30.

Before you leave

0/9

The hallway check. Everything here is free to fix now and expensive to fix later.

At transition

0/10

You have less time here than you think, and the queues get longer every minute.

Before the swim start

0/6

The last twenty minutes. Nothing here needs thinking about, which is the point.

Out of the water, onto the bike

0/5

T1. The one place where a rule you already know gets forgotten in the adrenaline.

Off the bike, onto the run

0/4

T2, and the first kilometre that decides the rest of the day.

After the finish

0/4

You are not done until your bike is out of transition.

Questions people actually ask

Tap a question to open the answer.

What time should I get to transition?

Transition usually opens a couple of hours before the first start and closes well before it, and the closing time is the one that matters. It is printed in the athlete guide, it moves year to year, and it is the single most common thing people get wrong at their first race. Work backwards from the close, not forwards from the gun.

Do I have to put my helmet on before touching the bike?

Yes. Fasten it before you take the bike off the rack and leave it fastened until the bike is racked again in T2. This is standard across the sport and it is enforced, so it is worth treating as absolute even though the exact wording and penalty come from your race rules rather than from us. It is also the rule most often lost to adrenaline.

Is a wetsuit allowed at my race?

That is decided on the day, by the officials, from the measured water temperature and the rules of whoever sanctions the race. A forecast cannot tell you. Bring the wetsuit and plan for both answers.

Does this work for a sprint?

Yes, and the list changes when you pick one: anything that only exists at long distance disappears. What remains is marked essential, advised or tip. Essential means the sport broadly agrees you are not starting or finishing without it. It is not a list of rules, because the rules come from your race.
