What you'll wear

0 of 14 done

On you at the swim start. Nobody hands you a bag for this one.

Morning clothes bag

0 of 22 done

White bag. Clothes for the walk to the start, and everything you want the moment you finish. Many races take this bag from you at the swim start and hand it back after the line.

  • Extras

Bike gear bag (T1)

0 of 24 done

Blue bag. Everything between the water and the bike course. At most races the bike is checked in the day before, which splits this bag in three: what goes ON THE BIKE has to be there before the bag is, what you CARRY IN goes with you on the morning because it cannot sit out overnight, and the rest is the bag itself. Each line says which.

Red bag. What you want waiting for you when the bike is racked.

Bike special needs

0 of 5 done

Orange bag. Where a race offers it, this reaches you roughly halfway on the bike. Not every event runs special needs.

Run special needs

0 of 4 done

Black bag. Where a race offers it, this reaches you out on the run. A spare tube in here is a spare tube you cannot use.

Not in a bag

0 of 20 done

Everything that has to leave the house and belongs to no race bag. A bike that arrives is a bike you have to put back together, and nothing in that hour can be bought at eight on a Saturday night.

Taperly packing checklist split into race bags

The same list in the app, split into the bags you hand in.

Before you ask

Do I need all of this for a sprint?

No. This is every bag a triathlon uses, and a sprint uses three of them: the two special-needs bags are full-distance only and say so on the line. Everything else is split into Essentials and Extras inside each bag. Essentials means the sport broadly agrees you are not starting without it, like a helmet or a timing chip. It is not a list of rules, because rules come from your race, not from us.

What is the difference between the T1 and T2 bags?

T1 is everything between the water and the bike: helmet, shoes, race number, food for the bike. T2 is what waits for you when the bike is racked: running shoes, run nutrition, dry socks. Many long-distance races use separate transition bags handed in the day before, but the system varies by event, so your athlete guide is the one that counts.

What should never go in the hold when I fly to a race?

Anything you cannot race without and cannot replace at the expo in your size: trisuit, cycling shoes, running shoes, goggles, helmet and the nutrition you have trained on. The travel section at the foot of the list carries that rule and the rest of what leaves the house. CO2 cartridges are the opposite case, and it is a rule rather than a preference: they cannot fly at all, in the cabin or in the hold, on any carrier, so plan to buy them at the expo when you land.

Is this list for 70.3 and full distance too?

Yes. The middle distance (1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21.1km run, often called 70.3) uses the same four bags as everything above sprint. Some full-distance races also offer special needs access, halfway through the bike and out on the run; those two sections are tagged for the distance that gets them. Check your athlete guide either way.
