Blue bag, red bag, white bag
Three bags, handed in at different times, in different places. Here is what belongs in each.

Blue is the bike bag, red is the run bag, and white is the morning clothes bag you get back at the finish. The colours are not the hard part. The hard part is that they are handed in at different moments, most of them the day before the race, so anything in the wrong bag is not something you can fix on race morning: it is behind a fence, in a field, among several thousand identical bags.

The list, as it stands today
120 answers from 64 athletes. Small, and stated plainly for that reason: this is what the people who answered said, not a survey of the sport.

Blue is the bike bag
Everything you put on between coming out of the water and getting on the bike: helmet, bike shoes, socks, sunglasses, and whatever you ride in if you are changing.
At a race with split transitions it is handed in at T1 the day before. That is the detail worth writing down, because the bag leaves your hands roughly eighteen hours before you open it again.
Red is the run bag
Running shoes, cap, race belt, run nutrition. It is handed in at T2, which at a split-transition race is not the same place as T1 and can be a long drive away.
The race belt lives here, and it is one of the most named things in our own count. Its whole job is that the number has to be visible on the front on the run, and it is the one item that exists in no other sport, so it is nobody's habit yet.
White is the one people have not heard of
The morning clothes bag. You wear things to the swim start, take them off, put them in this bag, and volunteers move it to the finish line so it is waiting when you cross.
It appears on the fewest packing lists and it decides whether you have dry clothes and shoes after the finish. It is also how your wetsuit and goggles travel to the start.
What actually goes wrong
Not the colours. What goes wrong is the timing: a bag handed in on Saturday afternoon cannot be opened on Sunday morning, so anything you still need at six in the morning must not be inside one.
That is exactly how the top of our forgotten list happens. Nutrition packed into a bag that has already gone. Goggles in the white bag already taken to the finish. Neither is a memory failure. Both are a sequencing failure.
The organiser's guide wins
Bag colours, hand-in times and locations differ by race, and the athlete guide for your race is the authority on all three. Nothing here replaces it: if the guide and this page disagree, the guide is right.
What Taperly does is take that structure and turn it into a list per bag that you tick, in the order the race takes them, so the sequencing problem above cannot happen to you.
Racing one of these?
